so I turn Quantize off then slip n slide some tracks to sync them with an audio track (i know you are supposed to slip n slide the audio not the video- but suppose i did slide the video) then once everything is in sync, how do you all you track back on the frame grid?
If you did turn off Quantize to Frames to slip/slide your video (BTW, a definite NO NO!!), you'll need to find the closest frame boundary and chop off anything outside of it at both the beginning and end of the clip.

Depending upon how critical your audio sync is, you should not slide the video with Quantize off. The video will have to go back to the nearest frame boundary, so your audio could still be off by up to a frame.
I think Spot is right on -- to me sync is when it's right for you. When you've got it like you want it GROUP IT and that's it. I've taken things "out of sync" (even lip sync) to put them "in sync" for the right impact. It's great that Vegas can maintain sync and sync things so easily but don't be a slave to the machinery and correct technique. Of course, look out for those straight cuts that bounce -- quantize baby!
