Question about 2 monitors + tv without a deck.

I've searched these forums, but the only setuup that I've seen that will allow you to have 2 PC monitors AND a TV for fullscreen preview is by going firewire out through a deck, and then to your TV. Now, I don't want this setup if I can help it, so my question is.

"Can VV be setup to have dual monitors (Using, for example a dual head card) AND full screen TV output all at the same time, without going firewire out to through a deck?"

I ask cause I know it's possible with Avid Xpress DV using a method where you set up something like the Matrox G550's DVD Max setting to send overlays to the TV out. Then combine this with another PCI video card for the two monitor setup.

Anyway, if anyone can tell me if this is possible with VV and what cards do it, I'd much appreciated it.

Cheers

Hi Aaron,

There are cards that do it, but you would be missing a key benefit of Vegas, the output of REAL DV output to a REAL monitor.

Sending an overlay can give a large image, but it won't be what your video will look like if you intend to output to video... It won't be recompressed to DV, it won't be YUV colorspace, it won't be properly interlaced and it won't be the right framerate.

Some folks do use the TV out; but not for true verification of quality, just a bigger preview. To see true output, you might get a deck, camcorder or convertor.

There are several bridge products for around $250 that will allow you to view the video signal being sent over firewire.

Dazzle DV-Bridge is one.

Thanks guys.

Marty, sorry for being a newbie, but I would have thought that what I see in the preview, if set to BEST/FULL would be what I'm going to see in the end because Vegas does realtime rendering to that preview window. Also why would YUV be any better/more accurate than what I see on the monitor, aren't they just different formats for the same output?

Thanks
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

They are anything but the same, for the reasons stated above. Even at best-full, you won't get WYSIWYG unless you output to NTSC/PAL.

There is a world of difference.

It doesn't hurt your camera, deck or convertor to output through them... after all, they are there to make you real video.

Ok, that sounds good enough for me ;) I'll go get myself a PCI video card tomorrow to go with my AGP one.

Thanks
