Question about Extras folder.

Terry Esslinger wrote on 12/14/2008, 5:16 PM
I authored a DVD with DVDA4.5. Burned the DVD and everything (menus etc) was fine. Played fine on DVD player and computer. Then I decided I wanted to add an extras folder and place some stills in it. I know the extras folder is only supposed to be able to be accessed via computer. So I folllowed the help instructions. Placed the photos in a subfolder under X:XX:extras:subfolder x & y. I the went to File:Properties:Disc properties:selected the Extras folder box and broused to the right folder and entered it.
Then I burned the DVD again. Now the DVD freeses up my computer when I try to autoplay it. I can bruse the DVD and see the photos, but the video will not play. On a DVD player it will not play. What have I done wrong?
Thanks

not sure what's wrong.

I don't use DVDA's extra folder option, I always burn via Nero & make my own folder that way. Never any issues.

is it possible it's freezing up because it's trying to display the images and play the video at the same time? Random reads on optical discs are slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Tried using IMGburn but have never used it before and that disc would not play anything. DVD player said wrong disc type. Really didn't know what I was doing. I authored it in DVDA and then put it together and tried to burn it with IMGburn. Didn't work. If I had hair I'd be tearing it out.

I generally burn with Nero but hadn't realised you could add 'extras'. Any chance of a brief description of how to do so?

just make a new folder on the disc. put in what you want. that's it!

Maybe I have a different version of Nero or maybe I'm thick, but I have no idea how to do that.

I use the nero burning rom app from the suite.

Ah gotcha, thanks. I got into the habit of using SmartStart, which doesn't allow addition of non-video files.

To get back to the original question....
Anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong with DVDA and trying to add an Extras folder?

BTW I tried Nero and get the same results "Incorrect disc". But again not sure that I was using Nero right. Never used it before. I created an .iso with IMGburn (I think) and took that into Nero and tried to used it as an disc image.

with nero you need to use the DVD video preset, not a data disc.

OK> If I author it in DVDA and create VOB files. I believe it creates and audio and a video vob file and the audio is usually empty (?). Do I take those vob files to Nero or do I have to make a disk image - iso- file first. Then how do I add the extra file in Nero.

I have not given up on DVDA extra file but I would like to get this project done. I would rather do it in DVDA but if I have to take it to Nero - - so be it.

1) prepare in DVDA.
2) open nero. Select DVD-Video, click "new"
3) drop/drag the contents of the preapred video_ts folder to the one on the nero DVD
4) make a new folder in nero on the disc (right click on the disk name)
5) put your extras in that folder.
7) burn

Not to keep this thread going but I havn't got it right yet. I will try that method with Nero tonight.
I got it ALMOST right with DVDA. I finally got it so that it would start up in a set top DVD player but the menu would not work. All the highlights would be showing. I could not move a highlight with the remote but I could start the different parts of the video by using the remote. Really strange. Can't figure out what to do next with DVDA to try and get it. As I said I would try that NERO technique tonight.
Thanks

Here are three screen shots which graphically show how to use Nero to create a DVD that has been authored with DVD Architect, and then add an extras folder. I can guarantee that this will work in any DVD player (I have created DVDs using this technique that have been sent out to thousands of clients, and never had a complaint or return).

John,
You gave me great instructions and I really feel stupid that it just doesn't seem to work for me. The problem is that there are so many options or screens in Nero that I can't find where I am supposed to be.

So..

I continued workiing with DVDA and I finally figured it out. Got the extra folder to work like it should on a DVD disk. Now all I have to do is duplicate it 50 rimes.
Thanks
