Question about HD in Studio 6

I have a non-HD digital camcorder and a non-HD TV (for now).

I have MS6 on order, but when I get it, should I render DVD's in HD format anyway, or would it work? I know it wouldn't be HD quality since it obviously wasn't recorded in HD to begin with.

Does that question make sense?

Or when you go to render does it ask you if you want it in HD or "regular"?

Right now you can't burn DVDs in HD, so it's a moot question. You'll have to wait until you can get HD-DVD software and an HD-DVD burner & discs.

Hmmm, now I'm thinking... There are two new DVD formats coming out soon, the HD-DVD and the Blu-ray Disc. Technically the Blu-ray Disc will be "high definition", but it's not called "HD".

Since Sony is backing the Blu-ray, and not the HD, I'm assuming that MS6 and other high-definition videos would be fine on the Blu-ray too?

Did that make sense?

Don't assume that one part of Sony knows what the other part is doing

at a very basic level the only thing different between HD-DVD and Blu Ray is that they are 2 different types of media (though Blu Ray does have the edge in storage capacity). Both of them can have whatever content you want to put on them. Just like you can put HD content on a DVD right now, it's just that not many players can handle the HD content.

Personally, I expect it to be at least a few years before we see burners and media available at a price that mere mortals can afford.

So what is the point in buying a Sony HDR-HC1 camera, which will capture in HD, if you can't do anything with it? And doesn't MS 6.0 Platinum work with HD video?

Do they tell you at the Sony store, when you are shelling out US$1,700 for the HDR-HC1, that you can only see HD video clips if you hook it up directly to your HD TV?

You can't burn a true Video DVD with HD content. You can use something like Windows Media 9 and create your video content in a WMV file, which can then be burnt to a data DVD and played back on a Windows computer (or a Windows Media Center) and on some DVD players that accept WM9. I think Divx is another format that can be used for HD and which more and more DVD players are accepting. Nero is also really pushing their H.264 codec, so you can probably expect to see players that accept that format as well.

Another thing to consider is that starting with HD and down converting to SD results in excellent picutre quality for SD; better quality than what can be achieved by starting with SD source material.

And no, they probably won't tell you at the camera store what the limitations are for playback of your HD content, just like they don't tell folks that purchase camcorders that burn directly to DVD that these aren't really designed for editing.
