question about masks

I have some video material with red areas and areas of different colours. Now I want to put footage of fire into the red areas. how do I do this?

(I have gathered some knowledge about masks, but Im not sure how to define a colour for transparency)

You may try to use Chroma-Key on the red area. (Won't work well if there is a lot of red in other areas.

I don't know if they took it out of the version 4 manual, but SoFo had a nice little how-to for something similar to what you want.

a. Make a mask, cut out some of the background
b. insert some fire video
c. the fire fills up the text cut out.

Result it looks like the text is on fire.
