Question about recording movements

Hi, sometimes I like the effect of playing with the "JKL" keys and making people more back and forth....does anyone know if there's a way to record this motion in real time? That would be a really cool feature if I could do that?

Also, I want to do like a studder effect in acid, where I can cut up the file on the time line and make it blink really fast...is there a way to do this without actually manually cutting everyhting up?

You can, of course, record the external monitor output to your DV device.

You can also create this effect on the timeline using velocity envelopes. Hint: negative velocity = reverse motion.

I find its hard to achive a back and forth effect because when I put in the velocity envelope, it goes back wards, but starting from the end of the file....so I have to figure out how to cut this, and it's confusing...any other hints?

This is usually only a problem when you simply want to play a section of a clip backwards.

In your case, it would seem like you want to start fowards, then have the people slow down and eventually move backwards, then forwards again, etc. This is actually very easy with the velocity envelope. Since you're starting with forwards motion at 100% velocity, move the cursor along the clip to the spot where you want the movement to change, then add a point to the velocity envelope. Add another point somewhere after this point and drag the second point down to -100% (for full speed reverse) or less (for slow speed reverse, forward, stop, etc.). Move this second point around and preview the effect. Moving the point farther to the right will slow down the rate at which the speed changes; moving it to the left will quicken the pace of the change. Once you get this second point where you want it, move on and add another point after it and continue.

If you want to start with backwards movment, trim the clip to the point where you want the movement to start (which is actually at the end of the movement), and change to negative velocity there. In other words, if you want to show a section of a clip from, say, 4 seconds to 8 seconds going backwards, start at 8 seconds, not 4.
