question about selected item

does anybody know how to not have an item selected when you first come to the menu? does there always have to be an item selected?

As far as I know yes, always - you can make it look much more subtle by playing with the highlighting choices, e.g. have the text change colour, or have just an underline rather than an ugly "blob" across the thumbnail.

Yes, but you could put the button out of the safe area near the edge of the
screen.

How will your users know what is selected if they can't see it?
