Question for 'farss'

BobMoyer wrote on 9/29/2014, 5:51 PM
You remarked in another thread: "If you don't have an external preview monitor you can fix the internal preview monitor by clicking on the FX icon on the preview pane and adding the Levels FX with the StudioRGB to ComputerRGB preset. Just remember to disable the FX before you render or you'll really get things messed up."

I am strictly an amateur/hobbist and have frequently used the Levels FX with Studio to ComputerRGB. It greatly improves the internal preview window but I have in the past also used this FX on the event level and have rendered but my old eyes have not seen anything 'messed up' (but then I don't know what I should be looking for). I render everything for BluRay 1920x1080-60i using MainConcept m2v template, so what should I look for?

I know this is really a basic question for many but I would appreciate your input.

Thanks,
Bob

I'm not Bob, but he "might" suggest looking for loss of detail in the highlights and shadows.

Thank you for the reply. I will take special notice of that in the future and remember not to make that error again. With my eyes, some things are difficult to notice unless I specifically look for them. But I strive for the best that is possible and appreciate the help on this forum.

Bob Moyer while the guidance you have given is a possible solution - a better one is to use a plugin called Antares - suitable for VegasPro13 - because it actually gives you switch behavior on the value of the preview window without effecting the render chain.

What Musicvid says above is pretty much it.

Of course you might think it looks better "that way" and for sure it well may, it all depends :)

Bob.

To be honest, cRGB looks better to me on an RGB computer monitor as well, but I've learned to use and appreciate sRGB. The trouble with cRGB is that as soon as the video goes anywhere else: Youtube, a projector, a Bluray or DVD, etc, the whites will be be washed out and any detail in the shadows will just be a mass of black. Yes, sRGB looks a little washed out, but once you get used to the look and feel of it your videos are going to look a heck of a lot better anywhere else. Yes, on your screen the blacks will look a little grey and the whites will look a little dingy, but that is only on your PC screen. Everywhere else, your video will look markedly better.

Antares plug-in? Where can I find this?

I edit on a laptop (on a boat) and my bug-a-boo is my footage looks fine on my laptop but it's often too red when rendered to BD or DVD using MainConcept. To compensate, I jacked the red way up on my laptop so that my unrendered preview "looks" like my rendered results on my HDTV. A bit of a workaround but it might work ???

PS. Posts like this are one of the reasons I love this forum. Thanks one and all : )

Here's what Antares means:
http://www.vegasvideo.de/extension-previewlevels-en.html
It is called "Preview Levels', developed by Vegas user 'Antares'

Love to see the development of this plug-in so it doesn't affect the metering in Videoscope. (just my thought :) )

I gather from the comment by "set" - that the member may not be getting the point of why the plug-in is designed to give you a preview alteration. There is fairly sound reasoning behind the developer's considerations. Please re-read all of the documentation and the detail within very carefully.
