>>>Sp1 had a bunch of issues with Vegas 4 and I wonder if Sony knows anything to beware of in SP2.<<<
I use Vegas 4 and also run XP w/SP1 - not any issues here ever.
Someone posted an issue with SP2 and Vegas 5 but I think that was fixed in the 5b update. How it will be with Vegas 4 would be a better question because not everyone has updated. I would be interested in a quickie poll: XP-SP2 with Vegas 5 and XP-SP2 with Vegas 4 - what issues?
*EDIT* - here is the SP2 bug that was fixed in Vegas 5b -
A bug has been fixed that prevented the toolbars in the Event Pan/Crop window from drawing correctly in Windows XP SP2.
There is I think an issue with XP/SP2 and firewire. This isn't an issue unique to Vegas, it affected everything from memory. Maybe it doesn't affect Vegas, cannot say for certain but there was a lot of noise about it on the Canopus forum as it screwed up things with the ADVC-100 and PP etc.
uStuff do have a patch that fixed the problem.
Sorry I cannot be more specific, not really into XP as yet.
I thought I would wait until the first V5 upgrade came out and then upgrade, but leave V4 on my computer, too. It's a mixed bag to me. I enjoy using my newly available programs, but I find V5 really hangs up every once in awhile where V4 never, NEVER did that.

This thread was addressed to Sony. No one has yet responded, and maybe that is because this is August and lots of people are on vacation. However, I hope someone from Sony DOES respond when they get back, because this is an extremely important issue. This is, after all, one of the biggest changes to the Windows O/S in many years, and most press accounts claim that it DOES break many applications in various ways. Will this include Vegas, Sound Forge, DVDA, etc., or not? I sure as heck would like to know, and if there is going to be a problem, I would like to have a road map, ahead of time, on how to solve the problems.
There shouldn't be any problems with the release version of XP SP2 and current SF/Sony apps. We've been testing for quite a few months with various SP2 betas, so if your apps are current all should be good.
The only gotcha is, potentially, 3rd party drivers for your sound card, video display etc- those are beyond our control. As of this writing we aren't seeing any problems there either but there's always a chance so be aware of that... worst case you could do a rollback.
If we do find an app problem caused by the released version of XP SP2, we'll jump right on it- if you find something yourself we'd like to know about it.
Personally I'm going to wait a couple of months with SP2 as I usually do with all software. This way most problems will be fixed when I do the swithch/upgrade. There will eventually be a Win XP SP2 disc release so one can do a format + fresh install from it. Might be the best way to go.
Although, I had to buy a new system drive a coupl'a weeks ago when the old died. It does take a looooong time to start over. I might have to rethink this... Hahaha
I did a clean install of Windows XP and applied Service Pack 2.
Installed all the latest builds of Sony apps directly from the Sony download page, and far as I can tell, all my drivers are current (downloaded from manufacturers).
All other apps (Vegas 5, DVDA 2, Acid Music 3, Batch Converter) seem to be fine so far, but I have had a quirk with Sound Forge 7. I installed it, then did the online registration. It went through, SF opened and I closed it and shut down Windows. Next boot up, opened SF and it asked again for a registration. I did it, SF opened OK. Shut down again. Booted up again, clicked SF, again it asked for registration. I did an online reg, but this all had took me to my registration limit. Called Sony to bump my number up and registered online again. Shut down. Booted up again and AGAIN asked for a registration.
This time I did the "register from another computer" and in the e-mail that came back, I entered the advanced user registry key thing in:
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Media Software\Sound
Forge\7.0\License] "keyRegFile"=......
Rebooted again and SF seems to open fine without asking for a registration. Don't know if that's a Service Pack 2 thing or not.
No hardware changes should have modified my computer ID, though I did have to remove my Adaptec ATA Controller before reinstalling Windows XP because I could not get my computer to boot from the Windows CD with it installed. So I installed Windows, booted it for the first time, shut down, installed the Adaptec card and booted up again (then proceeded putting in SP2, drivers and apps)
The truth is we really shouldn't be using our editing systems to connect to the internet anyway. As we know most of the SP updates are security issues related to the internet. Of course some of us have no choice and only have 1 system. But if you do have more than 1 machine i highly suggest you use another for internet usage rather than your editing station, that way you don't have to go messing up your working setup by updating with SP and other patches and updates.
I integrate editing systems for people and 90% of my customer service is due to damage from viruses, downloaded software conflicts and various other internet related problems.
That's an ideal, but my editing systems are connected to net and while the highlight with SP2 is security, if you look at the complete list of fixes, it includes numerous non-security patches and updates.
Plus, your system is not secure anyway if it's connected to a LAN that has just one machine and/or connection to the net. That machine will propogate many worm/trojans to non-net machines.
Unless you machine has no network connection whatsoever, not even a modem, only then can you claim to not need to apply security patches. Otherwise, those machines are even more vulnerable than patched systems connected directly to the internet.
