Question for the SoFo team...DH30000

What are the results, if any, of using the JVC HM-DH30000 to output from VV to? I really have not been able to find any sort of real 'reviews' or tests. It seems like it will accept *any* signal via firewire and if it isn't already HD it will upconvert...so in theory could you output a WS 24P DV project from VV 4.0c and have it converted to HD?

Anyone?

The DH30000 is a good way to backup a long (7hr) file and archive for making VHS copies, but it does not upconvert to HD. If you input a HD signal, you can record it. If you firewire a DV signal, it will be recorded as digital on the D-VHS tape in a 14mb/sec MPEG2 file. It does not output a signal from the firewire out except for a MPEG2 HD signal that has been recorded from your settop box. So far, I have not gotten the DH30000 to accept a signal from VV4. Only from a Tape recorder or camera.

Thanks for the reply.

A few questions as you seem to have one.. can you explain these quotes or maybe the manual explains these further:

D-VHS video recording and playback options: 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i - so then this does not apply to firewire recording than? Only recording a HD signal? Or I guess the wording of "option" implies the user can choose what format they want to record.

JLIP input for editing with a PC - what is that exactly?

The HM-DH30000's second i.LINK input and advanced MPEG2 codec let you make near-perfect D-VHS copies of your Mini DV movies, storing up to 24 hours of Mini DV footage on one D-VHS tape. - so is this set up like a standard SP/EP/LP scenrio? How is the actual quality in the "24 hour" mode? And than the video really isn't recorded in "1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i" unless the actual input signal is 1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i?

There is also the capability to output the digital signal via i.Link (IEEE 1394) terminal, so it will be possible to digitally dub exact duplicates of non-copyrighted content, and even in cases where the recorded program isn't in MPEG2 format, the playback can be routed back through the set-top box and decoded for viewing on a TV. - According to what you said you can't output via firewire? The specs seem to say there are front and back firewire ports - There is also a separate set of i.Link terminals that route the input signal through a DV-> MPEG2 Converter, thus allowing MiniDV video camera owners to dub their footage over to a higher-capacity high quality format for permanent storage. - so is there some setting to chage the inputs/outputs? For capture out via a PC firewire card.

Also I did find this and found it rather techie but very interesting - http://www.webtc.com/DVHS/default.htm

JLIP is a propreitary transfer system for JVC equipemt which requires the
software and gadgets( From JVC only) to perform the said tasks. I know because
I purchased it and have since discarded it since firewire blew it away.

I found this on a HD forum -

"the Main Concept MPEG plug-in lincensed to Adobe and Sonics Foundry will soon be able to output directly to TS"

SoFo comment?
