Question for TheHappyFriar on your Grad video project...

You said, in another post -
"um...... yup. :) Or you could ask permission (i just got permission from Fox Music & Sony to use a song in a grad video i'm doing. Took about a month & $50 ($1 per DVD sold) but oh well. :) )
"

Did you get permission to use the physical recording? If so, that's great!! Tell me how you did it, please - whom did you contact, terms of auditing and payment, etc. I've never been able to get the record company to call me back...

thanks!
David

I got permission to use someone singing it (cheaper that way for me, but she wanted to sing it too).

I mailed them a typed letter (that way they had it in their hand & couldn't ignore the VO or e-mail). First, I went to www.ascap.com & found out who I needed to write to (it gave specific names). Then, I wrote to that person (at Sony). They told me that I need permission from someone else at Fox Music first. I got permission from fox yesterday afternoon (with an agreement i just need to sign & mail inwith a check), the guy from Sony approved it last night, and now i'm waiting for paperwork (probley an e-mail) from sony for their legal stuff (already got it from fox, just gotta mail it in with a check).

I'll tall ya though: next year if I do the graduation, I want to know what they're going to do MONTHS in advanceso I can get clearance by the time the graduation starts, AND I want peopleto pay me up front (because this $$$ is comming out of my pocket right now).

I'm going to write a more detailed version of my "experience" in the other copyright thread (it's a little old, but it's also just about getting music permission) as soon as I get the checks sent off.

ah, gotcha. Yeah, I've gotten that far too, I was in hopes that you actually got permission to use an already-available comercial recording. I look forward to reading more about your experience.
