It's more about the codecs that you already have installed. If they're standard codecs and are installed on your system, Vegas will likely read them. There are some exceptions, but Vegas doesn't install codecs, it looks at what codecs are on your system and then uses that information to decode the stream.
HTH?

Okay that makes sense, but.............

There's a couple of media converters out there (MediaCoder and Super) that will take just about any media file and then encode it to just about any format. Where it gets confusing is using (for instance) an AVI output encode with the DivX video codec or perhaps the H264 codec............neither which Vegas seems to support.

So again, just what codecs does Vegas support or "read" ?????

Hope to hear back from you,,

Vegas supports DivX up to version 4, and supports h264 in version 6d. You're working in a very old version of Vegas.
Vegas will read nearly anything that you can put into a PC. It can render to a large number of codecs, and most of those codecs can be contained in an avi stream.

Thanks DSE......you are the man!!!! I appreciate the knowledge.
( hey, you should get a cut from Sony for support )

Well, sure it's an old version, but I don't need the latest stuff---------a least not for goofing around with home videos. Hmmm, maybe I should rethink that and go 5:1 with the soccer video of my boy.

I wish. :-) I cause em' too much trouble as it is...

Vegas 3 is an excellent version, I still use it on occasion for an old series that we're bringing back. I can open the files in Vegas 6, but once in a green moon there are issues.
Other than the H.264 issue, which is very easy to manage outside of Vegas 3, you should find you can open most anything. If you can't open it, be sure you've got the latest Windows Media Player, because that will help with codecs, and of course, you need Quicktime for any QT related codecs like QT or .tif.
