question on editing pieces on timeline

Sometimes I find a need to edit on the time line. I usually like to use the trimmer. Is there a way to splice, edit, cut a piece out without effecting other media on the time lines above or below? Example, FCP has what they call a blade. You can click a button on the timelines you dont' want effected. Edit a piece and delete it without effecting any other media on upper or lower time lines. It's lovely, premiere has it too. I am still learning a lot about Vegas, does Vegas have anything similar?

Cuts Only Editing Script

If you feel comfortable using scripts, the set above will let you quickly cut and trim video and associated audio (if it is on the track immediately below) without affecting any other tracks.

FWIW, if you turn off ripple editing, or just play with the ripple settings, you should be able to just edit the tracks you are working on without affecting other tracks. That is pretty much how Vegas is designed to work.

Are you talking about the ripple effect?

If the ripple edit tool is 'off' you can click the event once and split/cut etc without affecting the other media.

If you click on the desired event (video or audio) AND have "Ignore Event Grouping" selected, you can do anything you want to that event without anything else being affected.
BTW, the split (or cut or razor or whatever other NLEs call it) key in Vegas is the letter S.

Thank you turning off auto ripple, selecting event is what I was looking for.

I love this forum...........I'm a beginner and usually get the answer I need here, again thanks. I wish Vegas was the industry editing program of choice. Having to learn FCP is annoying

And remember that Vegas lets you lock individual clips. My version of FCP doesn't seem to, so I have to lock entire tracks to prevent rippling.
