Question on which fps to use

ChasMc wrote on 3/27/2024, 5:50 PM

I have a video (Family Wedding) coming up and I'll be using a couple of Canon XA-45 camcorders being rented for it.

I 'll be doing it in 1080p. It has two codecs to choose from. An MP4 or XF-AVC. I'm not familiar with either one. I would like to get the better one of the two and will work good in VegPro21.

The FPS for both are 59.94p, 29.97p, 23.98p.

Any recommendations to use.

FPS - 59.94p.

The reasons I would choose 59.94 MP4 format are smoother playback and slomo quality, and XF-AVC is not yet supported in Vegas Pro afaik.

Also, you might try shooting in 4k and editing at 1080p for the great cropping and zooming-without-upscaling capabilities.

You seem to be renting professional camcorders for the first time -- be sure and get in many, many hours of practice and always shoot the rehearsal. Come back to ask questions and post samples as you go.

@mark-y Camera only does 59.94 at 1080P

@ChasMc Look at some online wedding videos, 50% slowmo is common, but also another speed probably 75% or 80% slowmo, closer to real speed. It's supposed to make a scene more magical because the slowmo may not be obvious to the casual viewer, but the shot feels special. So need 59.94 for that also.

You'd have to make sure you have enough lighting, some receptions are lit by mood lighting and dark, depending on camera might be beneficial to shoot in 29.97fps to gain an F-stop of light especially where zooming.

Mark, I had been using (renting) Sony camcorders in the past. The company apparently stopped using Sony for rentals. That's why I wasn't that familiar with the Canon codecs.

Thanks, Ultra Vista for your info.
