Quick (hopefully not too stupid) question

Is there a version of Vegas that only contains the audio facilities?

I'm looking for a product that does multitracking but I have no interest in video. I would like to stick to SoFo products (I have AcidPro and SoundForge) because of their friendly interface and (so far) friendly and efficient customer service. Plus I enjoy the company (as it were) of the SoFo and Acid forum members.

Any help?

You really don't need to use the video stuff.
I'm not at my PC right now, but I think you can remove the video window from the screen. So you could gain valuable screen real estate for the audio side.
Also, you're right about SoFo support and these forums. That right there is worth $$.
I tried getting help from Cakewalk once...took a long time and only got a so-so reply.
I downloaded a demo from Steinberg once. I had problems using it so I contacted their CS, never got a reply. Their forum seems alot inferior to this one also. I found it unorganized, hard to get info. Personal opinion here of course.

What it comes down to, is Vegas is a killer multi-tracking app, and the bonus (at least for your situation) is that if you ever have a family video or pictures you want to make a montage with, you'd have a killer video app.

Thanks for the reply, Myst.

I thought I saw an advert for a soundcard or something where they were offering Vegas as an audio-only bundled software - a 'Vegas Lite' if you will. I was just wondering if this was available direct from SoFo or if it was just a sweetener for the would-be purchasers of the soundcard (or whatever - I really should have made a note of where I saw it).

Anyone who can give me a definite 'yes' or 'no'?

back in the vegas 2 days, it was split into audio and video. The difference was, the audio version had one video track, the video version had unlimited video tracks. There was NO audio diference. It is just " Vegas " now, with all the audio features of the past and then some great new ones. Get video out of your head, it really shouldnt be hard to understand but this seems to stump a LOT of people. Just remember it is the same audio program you always loved, but if you ever decide to mess with video, the stuff is right there to do that also.

If you order the "DV and Audio Production" book from SoFo it comes with a lighter version Of Vegas Video 3.0 and Sound Forge XP.

You can compare the differences with the full versions of the bundled software before ordering.

Anybody that's switched to Vegas 4, like the "audio side" of things mucho better than VV3...? ala your life is now fulfilled, etc...?

Stusy, I *will* when I get it working right ! The buss tracks and automation functions are (potentially) great.

Thanks for all the replies guys (are you sure you're not on the payroll?).

Anyway, it looks like I gonna have to save up some shekles and invest in Vegas. BTW, does anyone use Vegas with an analouge mixer, i.e. what are the routing possibilities like?

Thanks again.

I use it with a Mackie 24.8, but have not used it flying stuff in and out of my MOTU.
I guess no that we have input monitoring I should really get a rack of good mic preamps and ditch it !

Routing to a console from vegas presently is possible but there are some sad routing issues, that will hopefully be adressed soon

if you're really pushing the machine hard, forget input monitoring. For small projects, minumum plugins, sure, lower the latency and do it. however, low latency = high CPU load.

For the stuff I do, I don't see the point. monitor through the mixer, and maybe basic external hardware, i.e. compressor, reverb. obviously don't track those!

The plugin automation however, is the best thing that's ever happened to Vegas. Simply incredible.

Love my lil Mackie 1202VLZ-pro, and that's taking everything and routing to and from my cheapo Kenwood Dual Cass, my analog ONLY i/o's on my AW2 soundcard, my midi alesis 7.1 which I also run a serial cable into a port back my tower so both audio and midi capabile, useless computer speakers but cans are nice; I work in stealth mode most of the time all fed into an ETA Power conditioner and into a now totally dedicated electric line; top of line "cords" all around...it's a nice modest setup, and with 98SE is solid as a rock...even if I win the lottery there is NO reason to change it anytime soon...
