Quick question about interaction of BCC title studio and Vegas

Former user wrote on 9/20/2021, 10:14 AM

I am trying to learn BCC Title Studio and how to apply it to Vegas.

Can somebody clarify this for me:

If I apply the Title Studio directly to a clip, it overrides the clip so I only see the title, but in the UI of Title Studio, it shows the title over the background video correctly.
If I apply it to an empty event, it superimposes over the lower track like I would want, but the UI does not show the background.
Is this how it should work or am I missing something? Thanks for any beginner help.

You can apply it directly to a clip but you need to change the Composite mode to Normal (in Vegas Video FX tab)

Okay, great. Thanks I will try that.

Well, I guess I am confused, I don't see a NORMAL in the any tab. Can you show me where that setting is? Thanks

@Former user, here's a screenshot of the menu that @misohoza mentioned.

thanks. The version of BCC Title Studio that I am using 2020 (9.1302) which was included with V19 does not have that option. I see transformations, but not composite. Maybe something in my hardware doesn't support it, or maybe other versions of title studio do. I can work with it the other way, but this seems strange to me.

Okay, I just read that that option was included in continuum 2020.5. The version of title studio I have is 2020.

Hm. Is there an update available in the Boris FX Application Manager?

Former user wrote on 9/20/2021, 11:41 AM

I can't find one. This link was provided by Magix when I purchased V19 and was not from the Boris downloads. When I click for Updates, it says it is current.

I'm not sure how to proceed then, sorry. Hopefully someone here can help further.

I probably will just live with it. Thanks for your help though.

If I remember the explanation I saw somewhere, there is some limitation in the way BCC can work within Vegas' UI. The update in BCC 2020.5 did help, but you already said you don't have that. In that case, the old work-around is to have two instances of the same clip that you want to apply Title Studio to - one right above the other in a separate track. Apply Title Studio to the upper track - that way you should see the video in both the Title Studio UI and in Vegas. Hope that helps.

This issue was discussed on BorisFX's forum in July last year:

https://forum.borisfx.com/t/vegas-17-and-bcc-title-studio-composite-over-background/8437/4

The most important comment is from a BorisFX Senior Product Manager:

So what I’m hearing from you is that you would like to have the same level of functionality with regard to bringing in alternate host video tracks in Title Studio in Vegas as we do in Avid. In Avid we can pull up video tracks from beneath the title studio filter track in the host timeline to use as a template against which we can position the titles that we’re generating. In Vegas because we can’t pull up a video clip from tracks below the filter this is a problem for you. If the Vegas OFX API will allow us to do that then I see no reason why we would not implement this feature. I’ll add it to the feature wish list and discuss it with engineering - thanks for highlighting this deficiency.

Meanwhile, there are a couple of things that you can do as a workaround.

Apply the filter directly to the background source in the timeline, then once you have the title set up, save the project, delete the filter, apply a fresh instance of title studio to the empty event and load up the saved preset. Then you can use the host-side filter transforms to fine tune the position of the title over the video. This was already been mentioned in the comments above from Jezric.

Or …

Create a second instance of the background video on a new event track above itself. Then apply the title studio filter to that event (instead of an empty event) and you’ll (a) be able to see the video while working with the title in the Title Studio UI and (b) it will be a discrete title on its own event track and independent of the background video, just like you needed.

But what is good that in Vegas Pro's FX window for Title Studio, activating the Transformations settings does allow easy repositioning (size, X, Y) of the title when using Title Studio on an upper track over a black solid color media generator event - and that repositioning can be viewed in in Vegas Pro's preview window with the background media on a lower track also visible.

If Title Studio has been placed as an FX directly on an event on Vegas Pro's timeline and the background image does not display in Title Studio's workspace after opening Title Studio via 'Launch UI Window', go to the third icon from the left (I'm using 2121.5) in the Composite selections just above Title Studio's preview window, and there are 3 selections available from the icon's dropdown box. Make sure that the last selection - 'Compose over Background' - is selected. When selected, the Vegas Pro timeline event will then display in Title Studio's UI.
