to add a transition between 2 clips, do they need to be on the same track? I have 2 clips that I want with a transition but each have their own set of video effects. How do i do this?
"to add a transition between 2 clips, do they need to be on the same track?! . . well the conservatives will say yes. HOWEVER - ( see big type here . . . ) it has been known for me, awkward so-and-so that I am, to put a "fade" at the end of one clip and introduce a "fake" trannie effect . . well don't ask .. it's a Grazie thang! Now there is a more subtle FUNDAMENTAL ( huh, see more big type here . . . ) that you are touching on. Ahem! What is the purpose and aesthetic OF a transition anyway? Discuss!
. .BUT . . yes you can but a tranni on the end of ONE clip/event and on the one below have a tranni on the BEGINNING of the other. Now why you should/can do this aint a problem for me . . . why you want to do it is GOOD enough for me to answer your question here - yes? Now, are you asking if one can do this? - Well yes you can.
So are you asking about the "code" of editing to allow you to do this? Well I really don't think there are codes . . if it works and adds to the narrative or flow of the piece . . go for it! The aesthetics will scream out at youse!
So the next part of your question - "I have 2 clips that I want with a transition but each have their own set of video effects. How do I do this?" Now to the "crux" of your question. YES you can. You don't NEED to place on 2 separate tracks. HOWEVER, you can achieve some rather beautiful effects by using 2 tracks instead of using the one track. Just think about my very first example - applying a tranni to a "forced" fade at the end of one and the beginning of the other. Using your 2 track method "lends a "discreet" tranni effect to each event - your FX for each will remain intact. This does look cool!
So to summarise: You don't NEED to place events on separate tracks to "keep" your FXs for each intact - BUT you can if you want to! AND if you want to, there is a subtle cool effect if you do! Basically you've got a trannie happing over another with THAT interplay producing something else!
I hope I haven't confused you any further . .. excellent question, and a neat "sideways" look at transitions" too!
