Quicker Proxy Creation

wwaag wrote on 10/2/2020, 3:30 PM

For anyone who has complained about the length of time to create proxies, there's a new tool in the latest build (1.0.3.9) of HappyOtterScripts, KwikProxy, that may be of interest. Key features include:

  • Supports both proxy workflows (use of sfvp0 or swap files)
  • Creates proxies before or after full res media are added to timeline
  • Supported formats
    • AVC--hardware decode/encode using Nvenc, QuickSync, or Vce, or software only CPU
    • MPEG-2 (XD CAM) --software only without 720 frame height limitation
    • Custom--full range of AVC and MPEG2 encode options

Here's a screen grab.

Here's a table of proxy creation times for different types of test footage.

And finally, a demo.

@wwaag - STUNNING! - Went from 4k to 1080p in 50% of actual Timeline duration. I tried the VP version and gave up waiting for something to happen. You've done it again Waggle! 😉😆

@wwaag - TM of GPU whilst making Proxy:

Media was 4mins 44secs, KProx did it in TWO minutes.

It is a really impressive tool. Proxy files are created much faster.

Thanks @wwaag

Vegas guys,...is there any way that you can put a simple check box in the next update that allows Vegas to go back to the legacy 720p XDCAM MPEG-II proxy format. Proxy's used to work fine before it was changed to H.264. I'm not sure why it was moved to h.264 but that's OK if you just allow us to use the old settings. They used to be faster and smoother than they are now.

I have to believe this this is REALLY easy and quick request to perform?

While Magix can easily do this, it will never (I know-- never say never) be as fast as KwikProxy since it is rendered from the timeline. The major speed increase in KP is due to the fact that hardware decoding and rendering are done externally.

Happy Otter Scripts sound nice but....I tried the demo of 1.0.3.8. When trying to create proxy with the Proxy Assist, I would get this error and would instantly crash Vegas hard.

"Oops! The following error has occurred: Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

I messed with it many different ways then got frustrated and gave up on Happy Otter Scripts....sorry!

@cliff_622 - Sound nice? Wrong, it’s stunning 🤩.

@cliff_622 - I now can’t edit without HOS. Well, I could, but it would be a less creative experience.

Build 1.0.3.8 was released on Sept 6. The errors you describe always generate crash reports which unfortunately I never received. Nor did I receive any notification of such problems at support@tools4vegas.com. I'll be the first to admit that HOS is buggy and in need of better exception handling. However, I rely upon crash reports and feedback from users to correct such problems. My apologies for your frustration.

For your information, you can still create proxies using XD CAM. Just render your media file using the XD CAM template of your choice making sure that the render file name is the same as your media file name. Then add "-sfvp0" to the rendered file and place it in the same folder as the original media file. Re-open your project and you have an XD CAM proxy.
