Quicktime .mov to AVI

We had some full screen moving backgrounds produced that we will be using as backgrounds for our Video Bulletin Boards on our local Government Access Channel.
Each was created as .mov file; twenty seconds long; 600 MB file size.

Using Compressor with FCP HD, I've converted a couple of them to AVI...but they look pretty bad after the conversion.
Any suggestions on which converter to use get the AVI's to look better?

Thanks,
John Lanza

Vegas. I do this a lot, because all the HD stuff from Artbeats is quicktime pjpg, so I drop them on the Vegas timeline, run John Meyer's Events to Regions script, and then use the Batch Encoder to do it all. They come out looking great.
What is the size of the source though? Are they in a DV format? Animations, tga, png?

A few years ago I went from FCP to Vegas mid project. What can I say, I was converted. Anyway, at first I thought that Vegas was handling the Quicktime footage fine because it seemed to work and looked fine in the preview window. Boy was I in for a lousy surprise when I rendered some of this project. It looked horrendous. Worse than a VCD! Anyway, I ended up converting the clips one at a time with Quicktime Pro. It was incredibly time consumingl.

I understand it was Apples fault not Vegas's. Anyway, judging by Spot's post, things must have improved quite a bit since then.
