Quicktime Pro vs Quicktime Player

Vegas hates hd mov files: framerates in preview drop to 6 fps, no matter what your hardware is, and when rendering a project longer than 3 minutes and a half, you may expect random crashes and other headaches.

Vegas uses Quicktime player libraries, so they say, so I was wondering if Vegas would stop crashing if I invested in Quicktime Pro.
What are your thoughts on this?

doubt it. The playback is the same thing, Pro includes encoders & such. Plus, when a new version of QT is released you'd need to buy a new version of Pro.

I don't use QT at all, I use QT Alternative. But the best bet is to convert everything in to either a DV file or a HDV file. DV is vegas's native format & HDV seems to have the least issues of the HD formats.

It won't change.

The problem is in the way Vegas processes QT files, doing it in a roundabout way that eats CPU.

SCS should look at how Avid handles it on Windows, they wrote their own code to get the same performance as with AVI wrappers.

Quicktime Pro is just a registration code that adds some extra features that are already embedded in the same Quicktime software you are already using. What it will add is the ability to save and export different formats from the standalone Quicktime player. It doesn't change how Vegas deals with Quicktime.

Either way, do not update to the latest version if you want Canon clips to play on a Vegas timeline.

I advise buyiing QT pro just to have another tool. It is only $29. I have been using Version 7 for several years and I have not had to pay again for any of the updates.

QT pro allows you to do simple edits with your footage, and mux or demux audio and video.

For the price, it is a good tool to have.
