Radeon 6870 / Build 425

After my earlier post describing my frustration at the apparent lack of any improvement in preview speeds on Vegas 11 (64 bit) using my super-dooper-new Radeon 6870 bought especially for the purpose, I though that in the interests of journalistic balance I ought to post an update following installation of Build 425.

In short: it works! At least, it does in some cases. An AVCHD project with individual clip 3-way colour correction, and overall project level limiting, that under Vegas 10 could manage just 9 fps at "Preview Full" managed an almost constant 25fps - full tilt for PAL - on Build 425.

I say almost - it still showed a stutter at each transition even straight cuts but by and large it was much better.

Alas no speed-up on my project which used Sapphire Edge plugins, these apparently only go faster on nVidia cards, one of which I have ordered but (unusually for Amazon!) I'm still waiting for.

So my point is, kudos to Sony for a very fast update which made a big difference.

One caveat alas: I did experience a couple of crashes, one so bad it locked the entire PC up so that pulling out the power cord was the only reboot option

Regards
Dave

David. I am having strange problems with saphire edge and an nvidia card 17 computer setup. My audio goes out of sync on the timeline when played back using film styles and they have been looking into this for over a week now. I cannot use it to grade a whole film piec e because it goes out of sync audio wise. Strange. Any problems yourway?

Hi David

Unfortunately I am still waiting for my NVidia card to arrive from Amazon; it was supposed to turn up on Friday but no sign. I notice that they sent it Royal Mail instead of Home Delivery Network, which probably explains the delay as in my experience Royal Mail are a bunch of clowns.

In the meantime, I've since discovered, through loading "GPU Shark" as recommended by others on this forum, that it seems my Radeon isn't being used AT ALL by Vegas 11, even when showing the improvement I mentioned above. GPU Shark just shows zero GPU usage even though it's recording the fan speed and temp etc etc.

So perhaps Vegas Pro 11 really is still buggy. It certainly crashes my machine quite often. I'm still using 10e for real work, 11's just for experiments at the moment...

Cheers
Dave

Crazy stuff with radeon DJ. Good luck with the Nvidia card. Seems pretty stable here now. Still have a major slow down when trying the starburst plug which wasn't there until 425 and nvidia card used but other than that everything seems good. ; )
