I have the Adaptec 2400A and it worked fine with the Maxtor DM+45 45GB.
When I changed to Seagate Barracuda IV ST380021A, I found that the drives are not compatible with the 2400A.

As performance increase, yes. If you do not have any compatibility problem, the reads/writes almost double.

For video you only need around 4 MB/S (let's make it 10 MB/s to be safe). With the Maxtor I got ~60 MB/S and with the Seagate I get 83MB/S (On a wix of Promise card and onboard IDE).
