I have a RAID5 but considering changing it to RAID10.
Supplier says the RAID5 requires at least 10% of its capacity to be left free to act as headroom (free space). I wonder if anyone agrees/disagrees with that. I also have a RAID0 (GRAID) which I use up to almost 100% and never had any problems with that, so maybe it doesn't apply to RAIDs 1, 0 or 10 (?).
The article at http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/raid5-vs-raid-10-safety-performance.html advises using RAID10 instead. That's like having two RAID0's in mutual backup. I'm guessing that, like my current RAID0, would not need a 10% headroom (or a hot standby disk) so surprisingly in that case, I would actually gain space. I suppose it would lose bandwidth though.
