RAM Utilization

I'm guessing this topic has been discussed before so forgive any redundancy with existing threads.

I recently upgraded to a i7 system with 12 gigs of RAM. I'm running Win7 but currently using vegas 8c (32bit). I'm rendering my first video now on this system and while all 4 cores (8 threads) and running around 60-70% my RAM usage never hits 4 gigs. This is frustrating. Does the 64-bit versions of Vegas have the capability to use more RAM than the 32-bit versions or is there something I can do to improve this situation with the 32-bit Vegas?

I've performed the 2gig hack and experimented with a few internal options but I don't see any improvement.

Thank you.

not much you can do to get the full performance of your system as long as you are at 32 bit. I have the same system with windows 7 64bit. Vegas 9 64 bit is much faster with renders than 8c by long shot. It's hard to have one foot in the future while the other is in the past.

so are you saying that only 64bit versions utilize full RAM? I guess I thought because I have the 64bit OS that any program would make use of all the RAM. I suppose this is true for any software?

Ram utilization is not the key factor in rendering speed in Vegas -- CPU speed is. It will use as much memory as it needs, nothing more. I do not recall hearing any knowledgeable user on these forums speak of a Ram bottleneck during rendering.

Yes, 64 bit will give you faster rendering according to reports on these forums, but just because it uses more Ram is not the likely reason.
With your 32 bit version and your CPU not pegged, it's probably as good as it gets for now.

A 32bit application can only access 4GB of RAM even under a 64bit OS. The only advantage of running a 32bit app under a 64bit OS is you can fit more apps into physical RAM.

And in the bigger picture that is a very real advantage. Vegas isn't the only thing running. Windows is also running, of course. If you find the page file increasing drastically then your system is RAM starved and could make use of more RAM. And to have access to more than ~3GB of RAM you need a 64-bit OS.

Vegas slows down if anything is churning away at the page file.

My *.m2ts files, an hours worth will render 3 minutes faster with Vegas 8c 32 bit than with 9b 64 bit.

The latest render test will render much faster with 9b 64 bit than 8c 32 bit. Why? Who knows, maybe it is just simply how certain files are handled vs others.

This is on my newly built system.

Playback on the time-line is full speed even with Best-Full on both 8c 32 bit and 9b 64 bit!

I can even get full speed with Infiniticam on 8c with a setting of Good-Auto. Couldn't do that with my old system. In fact the old system couldn't do much with the lowest draft setting. Infinitcam will not install yet on 9b so I will have to wait a couple of weeks to test the results with it.

Core I7 CPU and 6 gig of ram. I need to update my system specs soon. Got golf this evening so will do that later...
