Random audio pops

Chris-Fix wrote on 6/1/2025, 12:35 AM

I have been using Vegas for years. I upgraded to 22 in the winter and out of nowhere I am getting random "pops" in the audio. They do not show up in the waveforms, and if I click "rebuild audio peaks" sometimes the "pop" will go away but most of the time it will just move to another clip in the timeline. If I edit the video/audio clip in the timeline the "pop" sometimes moves as well. When I render the timeline sometimes the "pop" also ends up in the final rendered video but usually not as many "pops" will make it into the final rendered video compared to what is in the timeline. I am at a loss here and any suggestions would be great. Thank you.

So far I have tried:

1. uninstalling and reinstalling software.

2. Making sure the project audio is set to 48khz 16bit to match the video audio.

3. Making sure my computer audio is set to 48khz to match as well

4. Uninstalling and reinstalling audio drivers (NVDIA High Def Audio)

The video/audio in the timeline is all from the same Sony a7s3 and here is one file:

There was a "popping" problem a year or so back but my understanding is it was fixed in VP22.

Very odd you are still hearing this in 22. I don't think it's inherent to the media in VEGAS. Are there any VSTs in use?

I just started having this problem in Nov-December timeframe 2024. I never had this issue. I even tried using audio from an iPhone to see if that helps and there are still pops.

I dont know what a VST is but the audio is straight from the camera and I am not editing it in any way. It is just in the timeline straight from the camera. I can edit the audio/video by clipping it and moving it around and sometimes the clicks or pops stop or it just moves to a new spot.

Chris-Fix wrote on 6/1/2025, 11:32 AM

If I put the audio into audacity and import it back to vegas, it doesnt pop. The problem is there is no batch way to do this that I know and I have thousands of cuts and it would take days. I would think this has to be a vegas software compatibility issue with a driver or something?

RogerS wrote on 6/1/2025, 9:29 PM

Sorry to be unclear, a VST is an effect for audio. But you say you are using no Fx so that's not the issue.
Many of us use Sony XAVC with PCM audio so I doubt it's a file issue.

There are batch ways to convert audio (though you shouldn't have to). https://www.shutterencoder.com/ can do this a folder at a time.

Does changing the audio device in VEGAS preferences (say from ASIO to Microsoft Sound Mapper) do anything?

Does disabling the NVIDIA HD audio in Windows device manager/ sound video and video game controls help? You probably have another audio driver (Realtek, etc.) on the system in addition.

Finally figured out the solution. Went to preferences -> I/O ->and clicked "Legacy AVC Decoding"...

Hmm, not exactly a solution but is a valid workaround. That's concerning that pops are a problem with the current decoder, MxCompound.

Could you share your CPU and GPU model and motherboard model if you know it? It would be great to know this to see what users are potentially affected.

Thanks very much. We have similar hardware (yours is the next generation newer) and will try to replicate this.

@Chris-Fix, is there a way to provide a sample footage that would demonstrate you issue, and upload to the cloud?
