random pops & clicks

i am using a delta 44 sound card and vegas pro. i am getting random pops and clicks on my recordings. (about 2 out of 7 takes) i am using windows 98 second edition on an AMD PC. the clicks and pops are random and i have used many different latency settings. the techs at m-audio told me that vegas doesn't obey as it should and that i should just buy and use another recording program. anyone have any advice? thanks, marc

What version of Vegas are you using? Are you using ASIO or Windows drivers? Though I don't use an M-Audio card, there have been a lot of posts saying that the current drivers exhibit problems like you describe. Try rolling back to the previous version (I think others have mentioned .29 as working).

As for blaming Vegas, this has also been done by M-Audio before. Bottom line from Sony, as I recall, is that they simply write to the ASIO and WAV driver standards, and M-Audio cards are the only ones that have shown any problems like this...

I can't believe they said that. That's basically saying they are not willing to support their own audio hardware properly. I won't be buying M-Audio in a hurry, just as I won't be buying MOTU again - their support sucked. I still have a few options left...

M-Audio has been notoriously VERY unfriendly to Sony/Sonic Foundry and NEVER own up to their own problems. That kind of statement only confirms what many already know about this issue. Because of this I avoid Maudio stuff on prinicple alone and would encouage you to sell the 44 and get an Echo product (or something besides Maudio).

MAudio has had problems with drivers and pops and clciks for several years now. I have a Delta 44 and it works fine with every program I have....Vegas, Sound Forge, Pro Tools, etc. etc. I also had the problems and found that going back to driver 5.10.00.0027 fixed all my problems. As mentioned, some of the newer drivers had more problems than the older ones. You do have to be careful with signal levels but then again, you have to be careful with signal levels with any card in a digital environment.

Check your driver version.

I have had good experience with MAudio support. If this doesn't work, post again and we'll see if we can't get together through email. I'll put you in touch with a guy there that helped me with a Quattro problem.

The drivers that I got with my M-Audio Firewire 410 list fixing clicks and pops in Acid and SF. Now the wierd thing is I had major problems with the entire PC locking up when the SDIF input lost its clock. So reading through their support posts I found that this was a major and as yet unfixed problem with the Mac drivers.
Amyways I downloaded the latest drivers and shock horror the problem is fixed, go figure that one out.
