Re: Capturing Analogue with VV3

Hi all

I have known for some time that VV3 cannot using the Pinnacle DC10+ capture board and , as I have some (quite a bit really) analogue stuff to edit, I have been going about things inthe following long-winded way.

1 Capture to Studio 7.
2 Render to DV tape (this seems to have to render everything even though I have not edited anything at all)
3 Capture to VV3
4 Edit, etc as normal

Can anyone suggest an easier (shorter) method thanm this? Is there another capture program that will enable me to capture directly to VV3 or is a problem that cannot be overcome because of the capture board?

Thanks for any help.

Not 100% certain about the DC10+ - but I believe it uses a format quite similar to the DC30pro (which is what I have) so your experience may be a bit different.

I don't have my DC30 installed on my new machine (as there are compatibility issues with my ASUS motherboard) so what I do is capture on my old machine with my DC30, then transfer the captured AVI over the network to my new machine to edit in VV3.

Since the miro/pinnacle boards capture in MJPEG (hardware encoded/decoded) I had to purchase an MJPEG codec for the new machine to be able to read the file (bought mine from Morgan Multimedia, but MainConcept also sells one - both ~$20-25 USD)

http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/
http://www.mainconcept.com/
http://www.jpg.com/video/mjpeg.htm (different prices for comm./non-comm. use)

I can then edit the files in VV no problem.

If you have the board on the same machine as VV, I'm assuming you've tried opening the captured avi into VV and failed. I'm not sure exactly what drivers/codecs are installed specifically with the DC10. Even though you can't capture directly into VV, you may be able to capture using the pinnacle software to AVI and import the AVI into VV. Again, not sure of the exact differences between the install of the DC10 and 30, so your experiences may vary.

If you can't open the captured AVI directly into VV, you probably don't want to install one of these software codecs on the same box as the card is installed, as it may interfere with the MJPEG handling of the card. (at least this is the case with the DC30)

A couple of other options.

If you are using Win98 or ME, you can edit the files from the DC10plus capture without converting to DV. VV3 cannot capture from the DC10plus, so you capture in Studio 7 and then enter the files in VV, the same as any other media.

If you are using XP or W2k, then you need a third party codec like Vinmangraphics mentioned. then you can edit the files without converting.

Another option is to transfer the video to the DV tape and then capture (if your cam has analog A/V in). Or if your cam supports passthru from analog to firewire.

Purchase an analog to digital convertor and capture through firewire.

I use my DV camera as a capture device. I connect the analog source (old 8mm camcorder) to the analog input of my dvcam, turn on the A/V input on the DVcam, (this allows the analog signal to pass through the DVcam) then capture directly into VV via firewire. You just have to remember to turn off the machine control for the capture device so that it doesn't try to play the DV tape. I have captured gobs of 8mm & VHS tapes this way.

Thanks.

My DV cam doesn't have anologue in I'm afraid although it does have DV in.

I'm running on W2K so looks like it isn't gonna be straight forward. IIRC DC10+ captures as MPEG1 so I would have to convert that to AVI; doesn't something like Virtual Dub do this?

Cheers

I forgot that I spent an extra $150 on my DVcam for the analog in and out. I new I would need it, so it was well worth it.

There's been so much I've learnt since the purchase of my DV CAM that I wish I'd known the existence of this forum (then again, I'd never heard of Sonic Foundry & VV3 till March).

Thanks again for all the help given.

Pinnacle miro products like the DC 30 capture with Vegas Video Capture under the Win9x OSes.
