Re: DVDA Is this a bug?

I a previous thread I mentioned the two 40 minute projects I wanted to add to one DVD but they were both (in conjunction with the menus, etc) showing a usage of 105% of available 4.7GB space.

I re-rendered the MPEG-2 files setting the bitrate lower and have two smaller files. Unfortunately after deleting the original files and adding the new ones the same 105% was showing. Even after deleting all menus, etc. it was just the same.

I started a new file and added the files and menus and now it is showing 98%. Can anyone explain why I couldn't get this result in the first instance?

Cheers.

DVDA gives you all sorts of completely bogus numbers for its estimates. I routinely render from Vegas at a bitrate setting given by the dvdrhelp bitrate calculator. I bring the resulting files into DVDA, create some menus, and then Prepare the DVD. The Prepare Wizard brings up the Optimize dialog, and it almost always shows over 100% utilization, but it also shows that no files will be recompressed. I just tell it to proceed and let it prepare the files

Yes, this is a bug in DVDA.

So, two things you need to do. One, always look at the middle of the Optimize dialog to see if any files will be recompressed. If it doesn't show any recompression, you can probably ignore the percent at the top of the dialog (I have see this over 105%, and still been able to create a DVD without recompression). Second, if you are at all unsure as to whether files will be recompressed, go ahead and do a Prepare, and then watch the messages that come up during the process. You shouldn't see any messages about compressing (except, of course, for the menus created by DVDA).
