Re-editing VOB Files

I just had an outside service dump old 8mm films from the 1950's unto a DVD (I had requested that they put it on a mini-DV tape, but they messed up and sent me a DVD instead).

My question, if I now edit the VOB file on the DVD and render and burn a new DVD will I be losing resolution vs. editing a mini-DV AVI file and then rendering to a DVD?

Most definitely. The MPEG-2 format is very compressed. If you edit and then re-render, the file will be recompressed further and you'll lose more resolution. Ask them to put it on DV so you can start with a .avi format (assuming that's what the file will be). Hope this helps.
