re-encoding AC-3 stereo, why?

mrAndress wrote on 2/26/2003, 1:10 PM
Footage is originally from DV-tape, imported as AVI-file into Vegas4.

I render mpg video file - MainConcept MPEG-2, DVD Architect PAL Video stream.
I render ac3 audio file - Sonic Foundry AC-3, Stereo DVD

When inserting video the (correct) audio file is automatically selected as corresponding audio.
(I have tried selecting manually as well, with the same result).

The Problem:
When selecting "Optimize DVD" DVD-A indicates the need to recompress my AC3 stereo audio. However, if I change audio format to "AC-3 5.1 Surround" I get a green checkmark. Hmmm....strange....Help!

The 4th post on this thread likely has the answer to your question. You'll need to explicitly set the audio format to AC-3 in the Optimize DVD dialog ( File | Optimize DVD ).

DVDA always re-renders my 48K/16bit PCM

Nope.

"AC-3 5.1" is OK according to "Optimize DVD"...
"AC-3 Stereo" is not, although the audio was encoded as such.

(I've uploaded a copy of the audio file to SoFo:s Steve Brenneman).

We are able to reproduce this problem. It is a problem with rendering in Vegas. For now, you can workaround this problem by creating a custom template.

1. File | Render As...
2. Set "Save as type" to "Sonic Foundry AC-3 (*.ac3)"
3. Set "Template" to "Stereo DVD"
4. Click Custom...
5. Set "Template" to "Stereo DVD Workaround"
6. Click the "Save template" button
7. Press Ok
8. Press Save

From now on, just use the "Stereo DVD Workaround" template instead of the "Stereo DVD" template and you should be fine.
