a big thanks to "GG" and everyone else in this forum
also, a huge thanks to the entire sonic foundry technical support team
i had many problems running vv3 - none of which were sf's fault
choppy picture, stuttering everthing, slo-mo transitions
you get the picture
finally i said, "f?ck it" and wiped my computer clean
reinstalled XP and VV3 and viola - vv3 problem solved...knock on wood
i checked codecs, dma, 3rd part plug-ins, everything
you name it, i checked it
so i am passing this along, if anyone has problems, vv3 works great, you may have a problem with another program in your computer corrupting it somehow
just back up your files, formate your computer, and start all over
this would have saved me hours and hours of time
thanks again :)

If it was running OK at one stage, you can save a lot of time under XP by hitting F8 on startup, then selcting 'start in safe mode'. As safe mode boots into gear it will give an option to restore the configuration to a previous date. Simply choose the date that you know the system was good and hey-presto. I have had to do tis and it works great.
