re monitor problems

I'm having trouble with "stuttering" or Jerky movements on my moniter. I am using a separate hard drive, dma enabled, for storage, no scsi, a P4 2.4 ghz proccesor with 1 gig of ram. I want to upgrade from Vegas 4.0 to 5.0 but the image on my moniter during play back makes editing extrememly difficult. I suspect it may have something to do with codec as my CPU usage is close to or at 100% with playback. Does anyone out there have a similar problem? When I tried the demo version of Adobe Premier I get a beautiful, smooth picture with CPU usage around 10%. any ideas?

What codec are you using? How was the vidieo captured? Is it DV, or other source?
CPU should barely be showing load when only playing back DV.

Thanks for responding. I'm using the default Sony codec, although I tried disabling it and using the m icrosoft codec with no difference, so i went back to the sony codec. I am capturing off of mini dv to .avi files. The problems occur as I add filters such as color correction, and transitions, but I would expect to see this kind of load on my cpu. thanks...any ideas?

You're simply running out of computer horsepower. When you add filters, Vegas will process the video and play it as fast as it can. The more filters you apply to a clip or if you apply a filter that requires more processing power, like a blur filter, Vegas can slow down to displaying just a few frames per second. In this case, you have two options; mark the region you're working on and and choose "Selectively Prerender Video" from the "Tools" menu or choose "Build Dynamic RAM Preview." The length of video you can render with Dynamic RAM Preview will depend on how much memory you have and how much of it you have set aside in the "Video" tab in the Vegas Preferences section. Either way, the video will then play at its full frame rate.
