Registering the product just notifies Sonic Foundry that you have indeed installed the software. It's a good thing to do especially if you want to make use of their technical support because then they know you're a valid licensed user.

Once you've registered the software, the MPEG codecs are "unlocked" and they will work. There is no extra charge for this. It's just the reward they give you for registering.
