RE: new 7200 ATA100 is dropping frames

Hi -

My C drive is a 7200 WD ATA100 20gig. I just added a 40 gig
7200 WD ATA100 drive to be used exclusively for video. DMA
is set on both.
When I capture using 2.0b, the C drive gets 29.9 frames/sec
at 3.5 Mg/s with NO dropped frames.
When I use the D drive it begins at 3.5 MG/s and then drops
to about 3.4 Mg/s at 27.x frames/sec. There are about 5
dropped frames each minute.

Why is this new drive dropping frames and running slower
than the C drive?? Any ideas...

Also, when I play back the video from the slower drive, it
is jerky and the sound jumps in and out. The C drive is
fine with very smooth playback..

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

if your new drive is a maxtor ... maxtor ships their
drives to " write verify " for the 1st 10-on/off
cycles ..after 10 times the write verify will turn off ....
you can download software from them to turn it on/off at
will ....
you can download from canopuscorp.com rextest or raptest
and it will test your drive ... with write verify on the
maxtor will get around 3.4 - 4mgs writes and 25-27mgs
reads ...turn off write verify and it will get 24-27 mgs
writes .....
