This will drive me nutz. I know the piece you are talking about but I can't pull the name out right now. Damn OLD AGE. If you run up against a wall you can always use Russian Dance from the Nut Cracker Suite. There are lots of recordings of it. Backtrax has a version of it in their buyout lib. Most people associate that well. I think the piece you are looking for is either Slavonic or Hungarian rather than Russian. I have three classical composers i am working with for a recording right now. I will ask them on Monday. One is bound to be able to pop up with the name.

Believe the style of dance is call the Kazachstaya, derived from the Kazachstan region of russia, where I presume it originated. Not sure about the spelling nut I'm pretty sure this is what the dance is called. Good luck, commie lover..

What you may be looking for is called the boot dance or Koró Boushka.

Be aware there are MANY Eastern European folk dances that are similar. The following site has a bunch of unusual CD's including stuff along the line you may be looking for.

"Fiddler on the Roof" had a Russian dance, but I don't think it is the specific song you are looking for. It might work though.

My band has played that song for years. Its always a big hit when we round the patrons up into a circle and the fellas (sometimes a girl will give it a try) jump in the middle and try the kick. OK, now the sad part is I have no idea what the name of it is, we've always listed it as 'Russian Song' in the setlist :)
sorry comrade

Iz kalled "Kalinka," komrade. (Someday I hope to be able to answer an actual tech question.)
kkolbo wrote on 3/17/2002, 8:37 PM
Kalinka is close and one of the traditional songs used but I do not think that is the signature piece that he is looking for. I will keep looking for it. Russian dance from nutcraker is more signature but still not the one he is looking for. Dang it I hate it when I can't pull the name out of the deep memory.

I can sing it for you, does that help?

Ya, da, da, da, ya da da. :(
sonicboom wrote on 3/18/2002, 12:47 AM
unfortunatley you're singing doesn't do it for me...hehe
i am calling a russian record store tomorrow
let's hope they don't sing either
thanks all

This is incorrect.

The dance is called "kozachok" (kazacok), and it is ancient dance of russian kozacks, legendary masters of sabre fight off the horseback. You know, these guys with long moustaches, high hats and wearing long black coats and high black boots.
