re: normalize audio

i have a problem with putting music to the time line in that some songs are loud and others are quiet.
this makes for a quite disturbing video montage
i have to continually adjust the volume---
is there an option in vegas video 3 that allows me to automatically sync all audio tracks i insert at the same volume level?
or, do i have to buy a plug-in
and if so, which one to you recommend?
thanks

are these songs from professionally mastered CDs? the volume shouldn't vary too much. I would try to use the quietest song as a guideline, and turn down the rest of your songs to match it. it shouldn't be difficult if you put each song on its own track.

if there is a huge difference between the loudness levels of your songs, you may have to use dynamic compression (built in plug in) to bring the level of the quiet material up without clipping it. I'm no expert at using the compressor plug in, maybe someone else will chime in.

Note that there are two levels you need to look at - peak and RMS.
If you have nomalised to peak to bring all levels close and are still not happy, you need to look at normalising the RMS to bring un-alike music closer together in volume. Alternatively You can compress to do this; However, you may decide that rather than affect the very nature of the music you are using, you would be better to normalise or automate the volume in VV3 in real-time. This way you can get what you want without affecting the music adversly. A combination of the three should get you what you want!
Good Luck,
