i have a pioneer oem dv104 bare drive
i read in this forum that i needed to update because of the new dvd's coming out on the market
i can write dvd's 2 times the speed and the new dvd's that are 4 times the speed may ruin my dvd's as well as my dvd drive
i called pioneer about this and we checked the firmware on my drive--since i just bought it
if you have firmware version 1.30 you do not need the update
i had it, thus i don't need it
but thnx for the heads up anyway

i have xp---this is how i did it
control panel/administrative tools/computer management/ click the "+" for storage/click the "+" for removeable storage/click the "+" for libraries/right click on pioneer dvd--from menu select "properties"
click on the "device information" tab---if the number next to "revision" says 1.30
you are ok
otherwise you need the update
i only know how to do this for xp

Mine started at 1.65. The update shows 1.90. Personally, I would update it anyway. It never hurts to have the newest update. BTW, the checker and update files are located at:

I haven't done the update myself, but several people at the forums above have reported problems with the update, so it may not hurt to do a little investigation before flashing.

This is a manditory update by Pioneer. Go to their site and get the checker to find out your version. Make sure you follow the instructions fully. I updated my drive without a hitch. Pioneer states that you can actually damage your drive if you use some of the coming speedier media with the older firmware version.

Been reading about the dv104 firmware update. I shoved mine in a ADS firewire tank. How can I check firmware version/update? Using XP device manager-properties dosen't tell me anything about the drive.

The software at the link I listed above (Pioneer's site) has the checker and updater that will work over firewire to check and update the drive. I updated mine over firewire using Win2K.

yes there is a problem with the update.
From what i can see, now that i updated it, i can't play dvd's in the pioneer anymore.
I don't mean to sound like an @$$ but thanks a lot, i went from a perfectly good dvd burner to a dvd burner that doesn't play dvd movies anymore.
and yes i did the right update.

Mine seems to be working fine after the update (plays AND burns). It seems that some people have problems and others don't. The ultimate solution seems to be to install the drive internally and install the software from DOS if it does not work with any other method.

i have the internal a104. i ran the update with no problems. i've burned several discs since then, and it's done fine.

No, if that was the case i could just goto "my computer" and click on the dvd...
It does play the dvd's but i have lines running all over now like it can't read them anymore and i know it's from the update.
