i just went to make my 3rd dvd and i think i have a problem---the other 2 came out great
i am converting my avi file in vegas to mpeg 2 mainconcept--dvd ntsc
this automatically moves the quality lever to 31
everything is hunky dory--or however you spell it
the preview screen is at best quality--not that this matters....
anyway, when i go to render i notice the preview screen is now GOOD quality
i only want to render avi or mpeg2 at BEST
does this matter?
what am i doing wrong, if in fact i am doing something wrong???

Sonicboom:

Go to File> Properties> Then look in the middle of the video tab: Full Resolution Rendering Quality. You can select your quality level for rendering here. Be sure to press Apply to save your new setting.

Give it a name and hit the floppy icon to save it as a preset. Otherwise you're flying blind unless you always want to bounce to the custom screen to check it.

then i'm going to sleep
i will author and burn the dvd tomorrow and then work on the preset

The only difference between "good" and "best" is how the pixel are processed. The "best" setting uses a much more elborate scheme to adjust more ajoining pixels if you made frame size changes, (applied filters?) stuff like that. The difference to the naked eye in most cases won't be noticeable. So all you're doing setting to "best" is ensuring the render will take longer. Test yourself. Do a small render each way, play back simultaneously, I bet you won't see any real difference. I did, and I didn't.
