Re-rendering .mov video to .wmv

A friend emailed me a short video he edited with FCP and rendered in .mov format. I rerendered it in wmv for streaming.

Two questiions:

1. He said FCP can't render in .wmv. Is that really true? He is new to editing and I just want to make sure.

2. Does quality deteriorate when rendering from one format to another?

I thought I noticed a slight degradation from his original, but not terribly obvious.

Thanks to anyone who can help. :-)

Your friend is right. He CAN render to wmv from Compressor though.
Yes, you'll see a shift in quality and colorspace (depending on the QT) when going to WMV. Shouldn't be much though, unless his QT is really small.

Thanks a lot Spot.

Afraid I don't know "Compressor ". Is it something within the FCP software? Hope it's not too dumb a question.

It would be great, not only from a quality standpoint, not to rerender, because I also found it to be an abnormally long render time when converting. Any time saved is valuable in itself.

Compressor is a compression tool that is part of the full FCP suite, yes. It's kinda like Sorenson Squeeze, but a little more broad and not quite as good.
