There is a veg on the VASST site called "Starfield" that you might find useful.
Basically...
1 track of black generated media.
Add noise (non animated)
Add threshold filter
Tweak as desired.
There is also a starry sky preset in the Gen Media folder if I remember right.
Programs such as Blufftitler can create/generate "fly-through" starfields...where the stars become larger as you approach and pass them. I'm sure other inexpensive programs will do the same
Scientifically, it's rather absurd, but a heck of a lot of fun. (Yeah...I've laid on a stool and green-screened me flying through space...there, I've said it!)
Vegas is fantastic, isn't it? Its media generator has a starfield. But there are other ways to make a very realistic starfield; one of them is with After Effects and the other and the best one (expensive, though) is with the help of a 3D software such as Lightwave. If you are curious, just search with google for "Lightwave" and "tutorials on the web". Kier Darby has written a fantastic tutorial on how to create amazing starfields ;)
And don't forget about the wonderful "Celestia". http://www.shatters.net/celestia/
It's free and it'll take you anywhere in our Galaxy. In 3-D and it'll save .avi's too.
How could I ever forget this one. Sure, Celestia's a terrific option. If you have a good graphic card and a good processor (Atlhon 2.6 recommended - otherwise "depending on the speed" you set your space travel, you'll get some kicks on the video) you can save AVIs.....Thanks for that, TheGr8Steve ;)
