Re: Temp rendered file before copy

Hi guys, when I try to do a full HD wmv render, VP11 renders all the way through to 0 time remaining (approx 12 hours). Then, when it is 'creating the final file' (which it does after the time remaining count has reached zero - an error occurs - with the report, that an error occurred when writing the file. This doesn't happen with smaller final files of 2GB's. [I'm estimating the full HD file is around 6GB for 30 mins of wmv video.]

I'm thinking that at this stage VP11 has already created a full temp rendered file - and is simply copying it across to the name detailed in the output file field. [I believe, there is sufficient space on the drive.]

1. I'm thinking I can potentially locate this temp file and use that as the final file after renaming it myself.
2. Anyone know where I can find it - as it doesn't get created in the VP temp files folder & I haven't been able to locate anything in the C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Sony folder tree.
3. Also, though I haven't been able to subsequently locate the temp file - I'm sure I've seen a setting like: 'clear temp files on exit' - which might have relevance to me locating the temp file. Anyone know if this setting does exist anywhere.

Simes,

I can't help you on what you're asking and so will let others do that -- but I do have one thing that you alluded to that may seem really "duh..." that has caught me by surprise more than once: do I really have enough drive space available for my render or am I cutting it too close?

Since I can render to a couple of different drives depending on file size, I occasionally forget. I've cussed at Vegas when waiting through an entire render just to get the error message in the end... but it was really my fault.

On an aside...

Also, if you haven't done so already -- in terms of temp file for Vegas it's a good idea to put it on another drive besides your system one. Same goes for all media and .veg files. Streamline system drive just for apps and OS, and some basic small stuff; everything else should go on other physical drive/s. Such streamlining takes the load off the system drive to just concentrate on running the apps and OS, so a slight overall execution speed increase will occur too.

Hi Soniclight - you know - I bet that is it. Before I read your post I had thought about that as an issue - but thought - no that can't be the case - as there's 14GB free & I'm expecting a final file of only about 6-7GB...

But thinking about it again - if the temp file is 7GB and the new final file is going to be 7GB - at a certain point in time, the system is going to need 14GB to hold both (until it deletes the temp file).

Hey presto - thanks Soniclight. Now I've just got to build up the fortitude to go through the 12 hours again!!! And free up a bit of disk space - somehow...

Don't want to burst your bubble, but i really don't think there's a temp file. When i watch long renders closely i always see the final output file growing as the render progresses.

lol Chienworks - how could you do that to my bubble!
Actually with the wmv render the final file doesn't seem to grow at all during the time of the render. All that seems to take place is an approx 6k header is written - and remains that way through the whole render time. It's only after render time reaches zero that the file seems to be written. I'm presuming there's different behavior for different render types/codecs. You may be correct though - I can't say I'm 100% certain at this time.

There is a temp file when you render to a QT movie out of vegas, but I don't think there is one for other formats.

I actually found the temp file for mov one time when my render crashed.

I solved this issue by turning back on my page-file (which effectively doubled the available memory from 4GB to 8GB). I don't know how Vegas handles memory when it's rendering, but when I had 4GB available, RAM usage was getting up to 99%. Presumably, when it came to copying across the file (I still believe that to be the case), being at 99% it was just bombing out.

As said before, that's exactly the case. The TEMP folder is specified in your Preferences and should be at least 2X your expected project size.
