Re - Use of mpeg4 codec in VV3 to output as .avi file

I have a DV captured film which I was trying to output as an .avi using the mpeg4 codec however, none of the mpeg4 compression codecs are shown as options in the list. I have VideoStudio 6 also and the 3 mpeg4 codec options are shown when I attempt the same thing using this product. Is there something I have to do differently in VV for these codecs to become an option. Thanks in advance for any info

Ahaaa! Another mpeg4 junkie.

"Is there something I have to do differently in VV for these codecs to become an option"...you ask.

Yes, you must use WMV..........OR...DivX /Xvid. Actually, these ARE good alternatives. Have you worked with these yet?
SoFo doesn't allow direct access to the MS avi-mpeg4 codec for rendering. I don't know why. Maybe they had prob's with it in house?MS said "Please Don't Touch"???Maybe because of the uncertain future.....MS seems to have abandoned this format.
You will have to use another app.(your VidStudio 6)to render to this "forbidden" format.
So, submit it in the product suggestion, and in the meantime, render to....uncompressed or Huffyuv, or DV, then import those into...your OTHER application for conversion to mpeg4.
Are you familiar with VirtualDub?

Just out of curiosity, what is it you want to do with your rendered mpeg4 files?

Thanks salad for the info. No, I am not an mpeg4 junkie I am presently just comparing different output formats for quality, size etc and mpeg4 was on my list. I was just curious why it wasn't shown. I am familiar with DivX but I haven't tried WMV. I have used VirtualDub and TMPGENc.

Yeah, your not alone in the "question" of why they don't appear.
Sorry I wasn't much help. On a fast PC, mpeg4 v.1 renderings using the highest possible data rate and quality settings, play back nicely, and look great.
You can get same results from WMV, DivX & Xvid, it's just that there's more "tweaking" to be done.

have fun ;-)
