Ideas for what? What do you want to do with it? I routinely use cheap $30 video cards for my video editing workstations. But if I want to play games I'd get a $300 GeForce3.
if you want dual monitors, AND games, check out the Ati Radeon 8500. it's cheaper than Geforce3. the drivers are kind of flakey, but i've got it working well now under Win2k. i'm using two monitors, each one set at 1280x1024 85Hz 32bit color. you can't have independant resolution/refresh rates under win2k with this card, so it's best to have two similar (identical) monitors.
it will also accelerate 3dsmax full screen on both monitors.
one bad thing... playing video files in Windows Media Player sometimes yeilds blurry lo-res video, or no video at all. the problem is with the directX drivers (another ATI driver bug most likely). if i turn down the hardware acceleration a few notches the problem goes away, but then i don't get any directX acceleration, which Vegas takes advantage of.
if you want stable drivers, go with NVidia (TNT2, GeForce2, etc), but if you want dual monitors, with the power of geForce3 (but for less $$) then get the Radeon 8500.
and if you don't play games, i don't have a clue what you should get. i'd probably still go with a TNT2 for $35.
I agree. I also use the ATI Radeon 8500 and experience the Media Player screwing up when using Hydravision. Instead, I've taken to previewing video using Siren's Jukebox. Works fine for me.
