"Realtime" capture?

There isn't really much need for this but I am just curious for if I ever do find a need. If I have a camera turned on and set to camera (record) mode. Then connect the camera via firewire to my PC and open up Vid Cap. Can I record to tape and to my hard drive at the same time, or even just to my HD in "real time"? I do not own a digital camera yet and have to rent them for my shoots so I don't have the ability to play around with such ideas:) Has anyone done this? Does it result in dropped frames? Just curious. Thanks, -Shon

No problem- you can capture live without recording to tape first (provided your camera supports that)

I've done this a few times in the past and it's always worked well. You can even capture "real-time" in analog if you wish. Statistically speaking, you should get better captures and fewer dropped frames this way since you will be eliminating the chance of tape dropouts.

What is that feature called? Is it the same as setting up the DV camcorder for analog pass-thru?

I really don't think this is a "feature" as such. It's just that most cameras pass whatever the lens sees while in camera mode on to their outputs. I've never encountered one yet that doesn't. Try it with yours and see.

It would not be the same as analog pass-through, since this would be getting the original signal from the analog inputs in VCR mode.
