Realtime Preview

Hi I am brand new to this forum and just got Movie Studio 3.0. I do have a question. When realtime previewing a collection of clips the transitions or cross fades slow the frame rate way down. Is this normal? My pc is only 6 month old it is a Sony Viao running windows XP with 512 ram Pentium 4 2.80 proccesor 120 Gig hard drive 7200 rpm ATi Radeon 9200 (128MB).
I know I could use more ram but cant afford it right now.
Thanks
Paleale

Actually, Paleale, this question comes up a lot.

There's nothing wrong with your computer. You're just looking at a "soft render." It will look fine after you do a final output. (Special effects also look slow in "soft render" but output without a problem.)

And 512 RAM is plenty for using this software. You can always benefit from more RAM, but 512 is far from an inadequate load.

Ditto grisetti's comment on RAM.

In my opinion, you'd do well to start saving for a second hard drive for a couple of reasons:

1) Working with video can make a 120gig hard drive seem very small, very quickly

2) Storing your video files on a different physical disk from your O/S and programs provides a performance boost.

I have a Vaio with similar specas as Paleale, and recently added a second hard drive (Webster 120 Gb). Installation went smoothly and without any problems, and the software for installation was very simple. I've found no problem with having clips on one hard drive while editing and rendering on the other. Actually, I have some clips spread between the two, and again this is invisible as far as working with editing and rendering is concerned. BestBuy and such often have rebate sales on hard drives, and all the wiring is already in the Vaio for installation. And cbrillow is right - the hard drive seems very small once you want to have a lot of movie material on them to work with.

Thanks Everybody, Yes, I am thinking about putting in a 200gig hard drive just for video. I just have to save up for it.

Thanks Again

A known topic here is slow or stuttering show of the more complicated transitions when previewing. This makes syncronisation of music and the video difficult. I have found a simple fix for this - probably many other users have found the same or other fixes - but I have not found a description - but here it is: When previweing, the framerate mostly follows the projects template meaning 25 or 29,7 fps. Not even a Hyper treading 3 GHz pentium with 1 GB DDR Ram can softrender this with the codec used in MS and You see a 60%++ CPU usage and fps dropping to around 17 when the timeline passes a transition.
The solution: just set the project properties to Multimedia 320x240 15 fps - and You will be able to preview the transitions perfectly in real time. When the video is finished You can change the format and fps and render it to disc.
Please make a reply here telling if this fix helps on Your machine or not?
