Reboot Swaps F & G Drive - Help!

I understand this is not a VF query but others might have found a solution. Is there a way to keep or "force" the drive letters settings for 2 separate external firewire Maxtor drives on reboot?

Presently I'm having to do a bit of shimmy with these 2 drives. The only way I can ensure that "F" is "F" and not the next drive "G" is to disconnect the drive/s and then reconnect them in the correct sequence with the "G" drive being the last to be re-connected - while the pc is ON. As the drives are connected via a PCMCIA firewire Maxtor card it, is a very simple act.

I can work happily in VF - both drives being recognised and working correctly as "F" and "G". But then when I switch off my pc and reboot, the drives have changed places! Sure, I can live with it, by doing the reconnection procedure, but would rather not.

I think we should take up a collection and all pitch in to send Grazie a Windows 2000 upgrade ;)

Is that it? Is that at the core of adding an extra external drive? It didn't happen when I had just one extra drive. But now I have 2?

Oh, while you are collecting - how about my new XM2? - Chienworks, the humour is welcomed - thanks.

Keep in mind that when you only had one external drive, you only had one external drive letter: F:. It's kinda hard to notice when F: and F: swap.

What do you mean?

Grazie: you mentioned that the drive letter swapping didn't start until you got a second external drive. Actually it was happening all along even when you did have only one drive. Whenever the computer booted, it would randomly assign external drive letters to each external drive. However, with only one drive, it would choose the first one it found randomly and assign it F: and at that point was done assigning letters. Hence it was hard to notice that your single external drive was receiving a random assignment.

For what it's worth, i doubt that upgrading your OS will help this situation.

To the tune of that famous Don McClean song, "Now I understand...." etc etc.

Sooo.... If I leave the "F" hooked up and THEN hook up the next - "G" drive it should do its thing. At least its one drive I don't have to worry about.

Chienworks, thanks a million. You give good value!

Off of the subject totally, I found an obvious and straight forward way to speed up and slow down "Credit Rolls" - treat them like any Slo-Mo or Fast-Mo clip. Use the Ctrl and stretch that clip! Or SQueeeze that clip for speeding up. Neat eh! Sometimes its staring one in the face....
