Rebuild Peak Files...Over & Over

MichaelS wrote on 1/7/2005, 9:09 PM
First, I've searched the forums for previous posts on this topic/issue with no definitive answer to my problem. The posts indicate that this is not an isolated problem.

The problem. Suddenly, everytime I open a project, the system rebuilds all audio peak files in the project.

The conditions are:

a. Load video via Scenalyzer
b. Open Vegas 5
c. Create new project
d. Import video clips
e. Edit project
f. Save project
g. Close project
h. Close program
i. Open Vegas 5
j. Open project
k. Peak files automatically rebuild

I've been using Vegas for several years and have never experienced this unexplained problem.

Is there a "switch" that would force peak files to rebuild? Any advice before I reload the program tomorrow.

Thanks

I could be wrong but I think Vegas is checking the file to make sure the source hasnt changed and if it has, it rewrites the peak files. When I open a project, it always takes a few seconds to a minute if its a big project as it scans the audio files to see if they have changed.

I am sure if I am wrong Spot or someone will jump in here and set it straight.

Pmasters,

I appreciate your reply. I understand the purpose of the files, the process of producing them and the logic behind them.

My problem is the "rebuilding" of untampered peak files for no apparent reason. I've probably created thousands of projects and have never had this problem. I can reload the program tomorrow, which will probably take care of the issue. I'm just curious as to "what has changed" to make this an problem.

BTW, it should not relate to the change in calendar year since it effects projects created today.

Is the drive which contains your media files full, or write protected?

No...there's plenty of drive space. BTW, it is an external drive WD 250G/ADS Combo Drive case. It had worked normally until last Wednesday, then suddenly began the rebuild problem.

The system is used by a "novice", so it is possible that he unknowingly made a change somewhere...but for the life of me I can't find it.

I plan to completely rebuild the system Monday...I'll let you know if the problem persists.

Thanks

I have seen how sometimes in Vegas4 if I re-open a file that I know already has the audio peak files, it will indicate "rebuilding files" but if I immediately grab the slider at the bottom of the timeline or change the zoom ration of the timeline the audio waveforms will suddenly appear. In other words, they were there all the time, but for some reason Vegas didn't know it.
