record dv direct to pc?

I know there's adobe's On Location but does anyone know of another piece of software that does the same thing (Standard Def DV over firewire only). A friend's church group was hoping to get something a little less expensive. I thought I remebered there being a piece of software that some of the users here recommended but I've racked my brain, and google's and I can't seem to find it. Thanks.

Doesn't Vegas Capture do that?

Or you could try Scenalyzer.

It does and it does it quite well.
I've done up to 3 hr. captures to an external USB drive with no problems whatsoever.

edit: if they don't have Vegas, try WinDV.
It's a free app.

Sometimes the answer is right under your nose. DaveT2's got it right. I've used all three.

Back in the day ... VidCap2.0.exe was one of the "free downloads", probably because it wasn't originally included in Vegas' install. Anyone could download and use it for free, whether a Vegas license holder or not. I can't find it on the download site anymore. Rats.

If someone really needs it i can probably dig it up in my archives somewhere and make it available.

Thanks, guys. Scenalyzer was the program I was thinking of. But... I didn't know that Vegas could do that. They don't have Vegas, but it's good to know that I don't have to use On Location if I need to do that.

Ditto here: I use Vegas capture and WinDV.

One advantage with WinDV is that you can get a larger view (i.e. dragging to fit almost the entire monitor) since the screen area takes up most of the app's footprint. Vegas offers a few more options in terms of real-time control of camera (pause, rew, etc.)

VidCap's preview area can be spread out to cover the majority of the screen too. However, the larger the preview the more of a processor hog it becomes and then there's an increased risk of of dropping frames if some other process kicks in. Personally i haven't had this problem, but it is something that one should be aware of.

I always set the video capture program's processor priority to above normal. It helps avoid dropped frames very nicely.

OnLocation has all the Monitoring tools to help capture a Perfect Image.
Will Scenalyzer, Vegas, WinDV, etc also allow for 'Monitoring' via the Proper Tools or do they merely capture what they're given without any possibility of adjustment pre-capture?

The only one i'm familiar with is Vegas' VidCap. It's purely a digital transfer program. What the camera sends, it saves. No modification is possible. I suspect that many other DV capture programs are the same.

None of the above (OnLocation, Scenalyzer, or Vegas) will change anything on the video being input as it's captured. They all simply record the incoming bitstream and put it in a file. OnLocation has monitoring tools and even monitor calibration, so you can adjust your camera to give you the correct video and be assured that what you see is what you get.
