If you record to another audio track? You should here other audio events while recording.

Grazie wrote on 10/2/2021, 2:03 PM

@misohoza - So, it is possible. I’m playing Audio on Track 1 whilst hearing this through my Cans and have Recording on Track 2. Have you done this? If so what should be the various Setups be?

misohoza wrote on 10/2/2021, 2:14 PM

Using headphones is a good idea. So your microphone will pick up only your voice.

You should here audio from track 1 just fine if you are recording to track 2.

Apart from that just check the preferences for Audio and Audio Device so you have the correct devices selected. If you use an audio interface with asio driver you should be able to select individual inputs.

Most folks use an ASIO audio device driver for 'overdubbing' work (old school recording terminology... recording a new track whilst playing along with a previously recorded track(s).
aka, sound-on-sound.. thanks to my former neighbor Lester Polsfuss.

@misohoza - And that, right there is where I believe I’m coming a cropper!

If you use an audio interface with asio driver you should be able to select individual inputs.

@misohoza - Yes I can, but it’s a bit “flaky”. I’m really not yet in my comfort zone. But thanks for reassuring me it should work.

Grazie wrote on 10/2/2021, 2:25 PM

@rraud - O..K… Thanks for your input. I’ve got a PreSonus AudioBox which is driven by ASIO. Hmm… I need to sit down in a dark tranquil space 😉.

If I get together some screen grabs for you guys I hope you’ll be able to advise?

misohoza wrote on 10/2/2021, 2:58 PM

Just to avoid confusion... Asio driver and audio interface is not necessary to record audio into Vegas. You can also use your computer built-in mic, usb mic, webcam mic... These might be easier to set up. Just select the correct microphone in preferences.

The advantage of asio driver and an audio interface is that you can record multiple audio tracks at the same time (by selecting different input for each track) as mentioned by @rraud and the audio quality is usually better...

An ASIO driver will typically introduce less latency too, which can be helpful if syncing the voice dub to video events or music that will be ducked in post. My challenge in the past has been ensuring that my timbre/cadence doesn't change when the music cuts in, so I typically lower the gain on these events while live tracking.

Nearly there….. I ran into lousy Noise-Floor, coming from the PC. I’ve got an external AudioBox on purpose to remove this rubbish. Tested all connections, radio frequencies, a different mic and cables. Still rubbish….. OK, I’ll update the AB drivers. All I achieved was removing the AB. Wah? Went to the PreSonus website and downloaded the newest version of their Install Manager. Total success. I now have an excellent S:N ratio with my “One-Two” coming out clearly.

Moral of story? The simplest of solutions, "Occam's Razor". Remember, that over the last seven months I’ve had the same amount of rebuilds and System updates, something had got lost in its way.

Now that I’ve got the nuts ‘n bolts sorted out, how do I make multiple “Takes” within each VO Audio Event, session?

Den24601 wrote on 10/3/2021, 6:49 AM

I use Window's 'connect' to view the video on a 65" TV, which is muted, and listen to headphones connected to my laptop. I record narration with a USB 'Blue Snowball' condenser mic which is held by an 'isolation mount.' There's virtually no lag that impacts narration, but my needs are pedestrian. I have also used a Motu M4 and Soundcraft Notepad 12Fx interfaces with various Shure condenser and dynamic mics, but prefer the performance and simplicity of the Blue Snowball.

@Den24601 - Thanks outlining what you do. However, now, do you have any knowledge on how I can record several new Takes?

... do you have any knowledge on how I can record several new Takes?

Personally, I record VOs in Sound Forge Pro with multiple takes sentence-by-sentence or paragraph-by-paragraph - and then edit those sentences/paragraphs down to a 'one take' read in SFP. This way, I can use the best bits of each take to build the final edit/take - I am not relying on a specific take to be the perfect read. But with recording VO directly to Vegas Pro with multiple reads/takes (and I'm assuming against the same video segment), then maybe record each take to a new track (as suggested much earlier on in this thread) but mute the earlier VO tracks when recording each new VO read to avoid being distracted by the previous reads.

This is only a suggestion because quite honestly I don't use Vegas Pro for recording VOs.

If there is no way of doing multiple Takes, then this was going to be my fallback. The thing is, I’m listening to the “bad” within VP and simultaneously recording to a new Event, and wishing to multiple Takes.

Dexcon wrote on 10/3/2021, 7:52 AM

I’m listening to the “bad”

I'm surprised that muting the 'bad' take tracks doesn't eliminate them from playing when those tracks are muted when re-recording. It's certainly not ideal.

Yeah, I can hear the A Event whilst recording a new B Event. If I can make life difficult I will 😊.

Grazie wrote on 10/3/2021, 9:07 AM

Well, shiver me Timbers! It works. I can keep recording new overlays and it creates a collection of Takes. I can now Select which Take I want.

VO Track and 3 ambients. I put my VO through iZoRX to further reduce the PC Sounds. Oh yeah, been messing with Acoustic Mirror too 😉

Den24601 wrote on 10/3/2021, 9:29 AM

I name each take, for example 'airport1', 'airport2', etc and like you said, use the overlays. It works for me, but my projects are simple.

Photo_G wrote on 10/3/2021, 9:31 AM

Cool...there really 'is' a DAW in there! 😀

misohoza wrote on 10/3/2021, 9:35 AM

@Grazie

Looks like you have it working now.😀

If you record takes just record over the old events on the same track. If you make a time selection (this could be the entire event) it should automatically stop recording at the end of the selection. This enables you to punch in and out if you want to re-record just a section.

Or keep the selection the same as the event to keep things tidy and ensure all your takes are the same length.

All going very well, except…. My Sennhieser Cans are hurting my ears! I’ve never noticed this before. Time for a change…
