I am able to record automation by dragging the volume faders with the mouse, however, I don't seem to be able to record the movements from my midi touch pad,
any ideas ?
Within the hardware control pages, there is an "Assign" dropdown selection. You need to assign a button to the "Toggle automation mode". This button then will toggle your fader control between the automation faders and the trim faders........ahhh yes, there is now essecentially trim controls in Vegas now.
Thanks Red. That seems a bit weird. Basically you're assigning an automation record on/off switch on the control surface ? It,s strange there isn't a button for this on the interface.
Can you explain trim functions ?
Also, can you explain how to get pre/post inserts ?
Thanks red
I knew this one was gonna get whacky. There IS a button on the mackie control for this. There needs to be a button that is global for " show automation controls". Then you will know what it is you are messing with.

Once you mess with it for a while you will appreciate the way they decided to do this. You can always go back and knoc some db in our out of the whole track, and thats a GREAT thing
Nat,
I think you're hitting every point of the email I just sent to Peter. That's why I knew the answer to your question, because I had the same question a few weeks back. It is a bit of an odd place and I agree with you, that there should be a button on the interface, because I just realized I don't have any buttons on my 03D that will send out midi CC messages, aside from the software Transport buttons in the Protools setup page on my 03D. I haven't sat down with the manual yet, so there could be something I'm overlooking.
"Can you explain trim functions ?"
It's a trim control for the automation fader. So in otherwords, let's say you do some automation volume ajustments, then decide you like the automation adjustments, but you just want to lower the entire level of the automation -3dB. So you, just lower the trim volume/non automatible fader control -3dB. It's not a true console trim control, because it's located post insert FX's, it's an automation trim control.
Also, can you explain how to get pre/post inserts ?
Goto the tracks insert, under the Sony plugins folder you will see a "Volume slider" FX. You can place the volume slider in any place within the plugin chain, so you can place FX's pre or post fader of the volume slider. The volume slider is automatible, just like the automatible FX's.
I just played a bit and it does seem functional, but a button would be a plus.
As I understand it, if the mode is on, it will control the enveloppes points on the timeline and the fader when show automation controls is on. If it is off it will control the fader when show automation is off. right ?
Hmm tested some more.
Show automation controls seems to affect only the mouse. So basically that button you need to assign on the surface is like the show automation controls but for the external device ?

The trim function is actually the pre Vegas 5 track and bus volume control. There is no difference.
What changed in Vegas 5 is that the fader can be attached to the envelopes on your tracks or buses. You have to switch the fader to that mode explicitly (track by track on the GUI, or globally from external control.)
Why did we do it this way? To be out of the box identical to Vegas 4. (We actually removed the Vegas 4 track and bus volumes and had some pretty loud screams from some early beta testers.)
Yes, and it's brilliant you've done that Peter. It's great to be able to globally control the track volume, pan, etc like previous versions, but then have an automation mode whilst retaining the overall track paramaters. This is something that's always frustrated me on other DAWs and you've implemented it really nicely. (Big thanks to the screams from early beta testers!).

Nobody heard my lonely scream after this though, when I said "it sure would be nice that when I increased the track height that both faders would be exposed on the UI, instead of this confusing automation ON/OFF view button. I actually prefer the knobs that where on the first betas over the final UI. You could see and adjust both faders much easier when you're mousing around. Oh, well we'll see what everyone else thinks. :-)
It DOES get confusing, but I still think a global show automation controls switch would be a good way to go.
I think the way the automation got implemented was great, there are so many times I would have to bang my head into the wall if I had my automation all set and no overall trim
